A Long Time Ago
A Bold Leader
For more than three thousand years, the legend of a great prophet leading his people out of slavery in Egypt has been told. With an Egyptian name of Moses, he was raised in the pharaoh’s household, according to tradition.
Fighting for Freedom
In the traditional story, Moses freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt through a series of ten plagues. Then, on Mount Sinai, he received the Ten Commandments on a set of stone tablets.
A Golden Treasure Chest
Returning from Mount Sinai, Moses had a golden chest made to carry the tablets of the Ten Commandments across the desert. Believed in antiquity to have supernatural powers, the Ark of the Covenant came to symbolize the power of freedom.
Leading the Way
Throughout history, the story of the Israelites’ escape from captivity has inspired resistance against all forms of bondage. The Ark itself became a timeless legend and a symbol of the idea that humanity is inherently free.
